Great Horned Owl Update

Only for the second time in 27 years, a pair of Great Horned Owls decided to use a nesting box in the large barn on the Reserve.  In early March, the female was seen in the box.  A few weeks later, in April, two chicks appeared.  Unfortunately one of the chicks fell off the owl box platform.  The fallen baby owl was taken to the SPCA of Monterey County for care.  When the SPCA returned that chick, they brought along another one, which was about the same age and both little owls were put into the box.  So now there were three chicks.  The question was would the parents accept the third chick or reject it.  This story has a happy ending – everyone accepted the new chick and all three little owls have fledged successfully!
