Harlan’s Hawk spotted at Elkhorn Slough Reserve

Recently what was thought to be a dark red-tailed hawk was spotted at the Reserve by Jane Rudebusch. Upon further observation, from Jane and other staff, they realized it was probably something else.  Local birding experts came out and finally concluded it was a Harlan’s Hawk.  There has been a lot of debate around calling Harlan’s a sub species of red-tailed hawks or it’s own species.  All of that aside, this bird is not normally seen here at the Slough as it is known to nest in remote areas of Alaska and Western Canada.
